Effective May 15, 2026: Charlotte Water will implement Stage 2 Mandatory Water Restrictions. Residents who wash vehicles at home may now face fines starting at $100. Commercial auto detailing facilities (including mobile detailing) remain fully permitted at the time of writing.
The Southeast Is in a Historic Drought, Charlotte Takes Action!
If you've noticed your lawn looking crispy or local lakes running low, you're not imagining it. The Southeast is in the grip of one of its worst droughts in modern recorded history. North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia have experienced record-dry conditions since September 2025, the driest stretch on record dating all the way back to 1895.
Right here in Charlotte, the situation is especially dire. Mecklenburg County has hit 'Exceptional' drought status the highest level on the intensity scale for the first time in nearly two decades. The Catawba-Wateree River Basin, which supplies drinking water to more than two million people across 24 counties in North and South Carolina, is critically strained. The Charlotte region is experiencing its driest six-month stretch since 1971.
"This is the first time we have experienced Stage 2 drought conditions in the region since 2009. Acting now will help manage what could be a hot and dry summer." (Phil Fragapane, Duke Energy)
What Are the Stage 2 Mandatory Water Restrictions?
On May 1, 2026, Charlotte Water announced it would implement Stage 2 Mandatory Water Restrictions under the regional Low Inflow Protocol, effective Friday, May 15, 2026. The goal is to reduce overall water use by 5 to 10 percent across the region to preserve reservoir storage and maintain drinking water availability. Several regional cities have followed suit, including Gastonia, Hickory, Morganton, Statesville, and Iredell County.
What Is Now BANNED for Residents?
• Washing vehicles at home (residential driveways)
• Lawn and landscape irrigation more than 2 days per week
• Watering between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.
• Filling residential swimming pools
• Operating non-circulating fountains or decorative water features
• Pressure washing outdoor surfaces
What Is Still ALLOWED?
• Commercial auto detailing and car wash facilities (fully permitted)
• Drip irrigation, soaker hoses, and hand watering
• Pool top-offs on Thursdays and Sundays only (between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m.)
• Odd-address residents: water on Tuesdays and Saturdays (before 6 a.m. or after 6 p.m.)
• Even-address residents: water on Wednesdays and Sundays (before 6 a.m. or after 6 p.m.)
Violations start at $100 per incident and increase with repeat offenses
Why Home Car Washing Is Banned, and What to Do Instead
A standard garden hose uses between 8 and 12 gallons of water per minute. A typical driveway car wash can consume 100 gallons or more, most of which runs off into storm drains carrying contaminants, none of it returning to the aquifer. That's why residential vehicle washing is now prohibited.
Professional auto detailing operations are a completely different story. Commercial facilities are specifically exempt from Charlotte's vehicle-washing ban because they use water-efficient equipment and controlled runoff management. A professional detail typically uses a fraction of the water consumed in a driveway wash, and it delivers far superior results.
America Is Waking Up to the Water Crisis
Charlotte is far from alone. From Florida's Southwest Water Management District implementing one-day-per-week restrictions across 13 counties, to communities across the American West grappling with long-term drought for over a decade, mandatory water conservation is becoming the new normal across the country.
Experts point to a combination of factors driving the crisis: above-average temperatures, below-average precipitation, aging water infrastructure, and growing population pressure on finite water supplies. What's happening in Charlotte reflects a broader national reckoning with how we use and conserve water. The decisions that communities and businesses make today will shape water security for generations to come.
Supreme Nomads Detailing's Commitment to Water-Smart Detailing
At Supreme Nomads Detailing, we believe that caring for your vehicle and caring for our community should never be in conflict. That's why, in response to Charlotte's water crisis, we are overhauling our detailing process from the ground up, prioritizing responsible water usage without ever compromising on quality.
Here's what that looks like in practice: We are actively auditing every step of our detailing workflow to identify where water is used, where it can be reduced, and where it can be eliminated entirely. From our rinse cycles to our wash-and-wipe techniques, we are implementing industry best practices for water efficiency, using high-pressure low-volume equipment, water recapture systems, and biodegradable waterless solutions that deliver the same streak-free, showroom shine our customers expect.
We aren't just complying with restrictions. We are setting a new standard for what responsible detailing looks like in Charlotte.

Frequently Asked Questions About Charlotte's Water Restrictions and Car Care
Can I get my car detailed during Charlotte's mandatory water restrictions?
Yes! Professional, commercial auto detailing facilities are explicitly permitted under Charlotte's Stage 2 restrictions. Only residential vehicle washing at home is banned. Supreme Nomads Detailing is fully open and operational.
What is the fine for washing my car at home in Charlotte?
Fines start at $100 for a first violation and can increase with repeat offenses. Charlotte Water and Mecklenburg County are actively enforcing these restrictions.
How long will these water restrictions last?
Restrictions remain in effect until drought conditions improve sufficiently. Meteorologists note the region would need approximately 14 inches of rainfall to exit exceptional drought status. There is less than a 0.02 percent chance of that happening within one month. Plan for restrictions to remain through the summer.
